About This Spot

Stepping into High Ground on Upper Street is like slipping into a quietly cherished corner of London that skillfully balances the hum of the city with a sense of calm. Early mornings here carry a soft, comforting glow, filtered through large windows that invite gentle daylight to play across warm wood surfaces and clean lines. The pace feels unhurried, as if time bends just enough to cradle your moment, whether you’re grabbing a quick coffee or settling in to linger a little longer.

By day, it’s a serene refuge for those seeking well-crafted coffee that tells a story in every cup — from a clear, full-bodied flash brew to the velvety smoothness of a flat white. The surrounding aroma of freshly baked goods, each with a thoughtful twist like hints of miso or matcha, invites a slow appreciation rather than rush. Seating options span from cozy counters to inviting spots outside beneath a modest awning, encouraging both quiet reflection and low-key socializing under London’s changing skies.

As twilight deepens, the space softly transforms. The shift from coffee to wine gently alters the mood, drawing in a different kind of crowd — those looking for a tranquil spot to unwind with a thoughtfully poured glass of red or something sparkling. The friendly staff’s curated selections and light bites, such as delicate crab on toast or subtly spiced sandwiches, complement the atmosphere of relaxed conviviality without fuss or pretense.

At its heart, High Ground is not about loud statements but quiet discoveries — the kind that unfold through small, human moments shared over a drink or a bite. It’s a fit both for the early riser soaking in a steady stream of morning light and the evening visitor chasing that perfect low-key glass of wine. Here, the everyday ritual of coffee or wine drinking feels a little richer, a little more connected, and quietly rewarding.

Decent batch filter and a nice selection of pastries, cookies, etc. Open nice and early, light and airy but with a comforting glow, just what you need with your morning coffee :) If evening's your thing then they have wine too. Perfect for Upper St.

Came in the evening, so walked into a wine bar rather than a coffee shop. Came for a glass of wine, and stayed for a few. Staff were very friendly and helpful, picking some really great wines for us to try. I got some crab toast that was absolutely gorgeous, honestly the perfect snack. A super nice, small wine bar for a quiet drink.

Upping this to 5* after a year since it has really found its pace as a distinctive destination. Coffee remains excellent, and the pastry/sandwich range has improved - with a twist (eg miso and matcha in the cookies, spicy salami in the sandwiches and even small kouign-amann for a lighter take on Breton pastries. Here’s the previous review which still stands, just dialled up! Good coffee from, nice ambience and the coffee/wine/cake combo is quite endearing. Pace is just a little laid-back and disengaged, and it suffers somewhat by comparison with its neighbour. The ‘no laptops’ policy is quite refreshing, even if it’s not contextualised. The layout would soon be cluttered with three homeworkers on a video call, so full marks for making this a more contained experience. Just misses out on that destination/hideaway feel, but could grow into it.

Came here on a balmy morning for a coffee and a cookie and I was not disappointed. I had an iced flash brew which was full bodied and beautifully clear. The shoryu chocolate cookie was the perfect balance of crumble and moisture. There are two tables and chairs outside under an awning, with several spaces inside along purpose built counters. There’s a wide selection of wine available to purchase too, if that’s your thing. Staff are polite and charming. Highly recommended.

A cute cafe that has 2 floors (come in deeper and you can find the stairs that lead you downstairs). I loved their cute latte art the miso cookie was nice too!
